Maybe your teen is talking to you less. Their anxiety seems louder, school feels heavier, or small frustrations suddenly turn into tears, anger, or shutting down. You know adolescence comes with change, but something about this feels different.
At Rooted Rhythm, our Austin teen therapists provide Texas teens with a place to feel understood without being judged, lectured, or pressured to have everything figured out. We help teens make sense of big emotions, strengthen their sense of self, and feel more confident navigating relationships, school, identity, and change.

Meet our Austin Teen Counselors
Sara Galaso
Good fit for teens navigating grief & major life changesHi, I’m Sara, and I specialize in teen counseling for adolescents navigating grief, divorce, identity changes, faith deconstruction, and other major transitions that can leave a family feeling unsteady.
Hi, I'm Sara. I work especially well with teens who are trying to find their footing after something important in their life has changed. Grief doesn't only happen after a death. Divorce, changing family dynamics, shifts in faith, moves, and other major transitions can leave teens carrying emotions they do not always know how to name.
My background working intensively with migrant and refugee families has also shaped the way I think about identity, culture, family relationships, and belonging. I offer a warm place for teens to process big emotions while strengthening their connection to themselves and the people around them.
As a mom of three teenage daughters, I also have a deep appreciation for how much growth, questioning, independence, and change can happen during these years. I offer therapy in both English and Spanish, which can be especially valuable for families who want culturally responsive support that honors the language spoken at home.

Sophie Schauermann, MSW, LCSW
Good fit for sensitive teens & parents wanting a family-centered approach
Hi, I'm Sophie. I believe teens need therapy that respects the developmental stage they’re actually in, not adult therapy simply repackaged for someone younger.
My background in child development and clinical psychology, along with years of working closely with children and families in homes, schools, and outpatient settings, shapes the way I support adolescents. I look at the whole picture: who your teen is, what their nervous system may be communicating, what is happening in their relationships, and how the adults around them can support their growth without taking over their process.
Families may choose to work with me when they want a therapist who understands that helping a teen does not happen in isolation. I value giving teenagers the independence they need while helping parents better understand what is underneath the behavior they are seeing. That balance can create more trust, connection, and room for your teen to become more fully themselves.

Katie Cox, MS, LPC
Good fit for teens who connect through creativity & movement
Hi, I'm Katie. Sitting across from an adult and talking about feelings for 50 minutes does not work for every teenager, and it doesn't have to.
I earned my master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with a special concentration in adolescents, and I love helping teens find ways to understand themselves that feel natural to them. I use expressive arts, activities, and movement alongside traditional therapy, giving teens different ways to explore emotions and experiences when words are not enough.
I may be an especially good fit for teens dealing with anxiety, depression, grief, LGBTQ+ concerns, life transitions, or autism. I also have experience in partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient settings, so I'm comfortable supporting teens whose emotions or circumstances have felt especially overwhelming. As a comprehensively certified Pilates instructor, I bring additional awareness to the mind-body connection and can incorporate movement into teen therapy in Austin when it helps a teen feel more grounded and engaged.
Credentials: Licensed Professional Counselor

What sets our approach to Austin teen therapy apart
We respect your teen’s growing independence. Teens need a space where they can build trust with their therapist and talk openly without feeling like every session will be reported back to their parents.
We specialize in sensitive and emotional teens. Feeling deeply isn’t something your teen needs to grow out of. Teen therapy in Austin can help them understand their sensitivity and learn how to work with it rather than against it.
We look underneath behavior. Anger, avoidance, shutting down, perfectionism, or pulling away can all serve a purpose. We get curious about what’s driving those patterns instead of simply trying to stop them.
Parents still have support. Parenting a teen can bring up a lot—worry, frustration, helplessness, old wounds, or the feeling that nothing you try is working. Rooted Rhythm offers parent coaching and, when needed, therapy for parents who want their own space to process what is coming up, better understand their teen, and respond with more steadiness and connection.
Therapist fit matters. A teenager is much more likely to engage when they feel comfortable with the person sitting across from them. Our Austin teen therapists help families find a clinician whose personality, experience, and approach fit the teen in front of us.
Virtual therapy makes support more accessible in Austin. Rooted Rhythm clinicians licensed in Texas can work with families virtually, allowing Austin teens to meet with their therapist from a familiar environment.
Meet the Founder
Sophie Schauermann, MSW, LCSW
Rooted Rhythm was founded by Sophie Schauermann, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with more than a decade of experience supporting children, teens, and families. With a background in child development and clinical psychology, Sophie built Rooted Rhythm around the belief that young people deserve care that reflects their developmental needs, sensitivity, relationships, and nervous systems-not simply a scaled-down version of adult therapy.
Her work also led to the creation of the Tuned In Institute. The Institute offers programs and resources for sensitive children, teens, adults, parents, and professionals, translating ideas around attachment, nervous-system regulation, and sensitivity into practical tools families can use in everyday life.
Members can also access Remi, the Tuned In AI Concierge, an educational guide trained on resources and curriculum from the Tuned In Institute and Rooted Rhythm. Families can ask questions in everyday language and receive practical guidance along with relevant resources, creating another way to access support and education between therapy sessions.
Sophie is also the author of the Tuned In book series, with guides for parents of sensitive children, adults, and parents of sensitive teens.
FAQs about teen therapy in Austin
-
Not every difficult week or mood change means your teen needs counseling. However, it may be worth reaching out when anxiety, sadness, anger, withdrawal, relationship struggles, or changes in school and daily functioning continue over time or begin interfering with their quality of life.
You also do not need to identify a specific diagnosis first. If you sense your teen is struggling and neither of you knows what to do next, an initial consultation can help you explore whether therapy may be useful.
-
There is no single therapy approach that is best for every teenager. The right approach depends on your teen’s personality, concerns, developmental needs, and how they naturally communicate.
Rooted Rhythm prioritizes the therapeutic relationship while drawing from developmentally informed, attachment-centered, trauma-informed, creative, somatic, and other approaches depending on the clinician and teen. Most importantly, your teen should feel respected and genuinely comfortable enough to participate in the process.
-
Teenagers need an appropriate degree of privacy to build trust with their therapist. Rooted Rhythm generally gives teens more independence in therapy than younger children while maintaining communication with caregivers when appropriate.
The practice initially meets with parents and encourages healthy communication between teens and their families. Parent involvement can also increase when a teen wants or needs additional support.
-
Trying to force a teenager to open up can make them even more resistant. Rooted Rhythm requires teens to choose to engage in therapy themselves and treats that consent as an important part of creating a respectful therapeutic relationship.
Parents can still reach out for guidance if a teen is hesitant. Sometimes learning more about the process, having input into therapist selection, and understanding that therapy will include privacy can make counseling feel less threatening.

Yes, teen therapy is often covered by insurance. But it can depend on your specific coverage and plan. At Rooted Rhythm, our practice operates like a private pay practice, but we do accept some insurance. In Texas, we accept United, Anthem BCBS, Aetna and First Health/Curative insurance plans. Reach out to us and we’ll discuss your specific coverage and costs.
